As a member of the Flemingdon Park community, Hosna Sahak is proud to identify herself as part of a multicultural nation. However, her artwork shows a glimpse of the issues in her neighborhood.
The characters on the right are all immigrants seeking a better future: a man of high profession is seeking better job opportunities; a child is seeking better education; a refugee is seeking to escape poverty and their minority status, and a pregnant mother is seeking a better future for her soon – born child. Unfortunately, the left shows the reality of their lives when they settle here: the man becomes unemployed; the child is bullied for his status and many barriers, including language, hinder his pursuit for a better education; the refugee has a low socio-economic background and lives an impoverished life, and the mother has clashing values with her Canadian-born child.
While multiculturalism contributes to the beauty and the essence of our community, Hosna believes that our neighborhood lacks the many facilities and resources needed to help families establish a better life. She is happy to hang her painting in this room because she believes that this radio station gives a voice to the ignored echoes behind the wall and inspires youth to seal the crack in their lives.
